So, with all the excitement of Dollar Tree now accepting coupons, I decided I should make my own trip out there to check it out. Based on things that fans were stating on other blogs & what some bloggers are posting, I thought I might score tons of great freebies. Well, didn’t turn out that way. I mean, yes, I did score some freebies, but not a whole lot. You can go HERE to see their new coupon policy.

Bummer #1:  the Huntsville stores have taken #8 (Only one (1) manufacturer’s coupon will be accepted per item) to mean that only one LIKE coupon can be used per transaction instead of what the policy states which is 1 coupon per item. One coupon per item at other stores means that if I buy 4 boxes of Shredded Wheat & have 4 coupons, then I can use one coupon per box & purchase all four at once. The stores here have taken the policy to mean that you are only allowed to use one coupon even if you buy 4 boxes & have a coupon for each.

Bummer #2: I read many comments of people getting free & cheap toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant & so forth, so I definitely checked those out. Well, if you reach the coupons, they do NOT match the sizes & styles that Dollar Tree sales on MANY of the items, so please be very careful!

Bummer #3: All stores are not alike, so what I find, you might not find at your store. It varies greatly even store to store.

So, besides the Shredded Wheat deal above, here are some things that I found good:

*I have a child who doesn’t drink milk so to find Westsoy Soymilk for $1 is amazing. Only one of the two stores carried it. They also carried Nature’s Own Bread! Good quality bread, so keey an eye out for their bread.

Libby’s Canned Vegetables, $.79
$1/4 Libby’s Canned Vegetables, exp. 10/31/12 (RP 08/26/12)
= $.54 each

One of the things I heard about was Betty Crocker Fruit Roll-ups being cheap. I did find these boxes of Betty Crocker Fruit Roll-ups, so $.75/2 makes them $.62 each, but I am not sure it’s a good deal since these boxes have only 4 roll-ups per box.

*I show this picture to clarify that the coupon I am holding in this picture does not match the Comet that the Dollar Tree in my area sales. The coupon from the paper is for Comet Stainless Steel Cleaner in the blue cans. But, if you have the coupon from All You that I have listed below, then you can get Comet for just $.25.

Comet Cleaner, $1
$0.75/1 Comet Product, exp. 9/1/12 (ALL YOU Apr ’12)
= $.25

 THE BAD:

I kept hearing of people getting cheap Colgate toothbrushes, so that was one of the first things I checked. The two stores in my area DID carry Colgate Toothbrushes, but if you look closely, they are the Extra Clean Toothbrushes. Sadly, the coupon states clearly that the Extra Clean Toothbrushes are EXCLUDED! So, please be careful to READ your coupons! If your store carries Colgate Toothbrushes that are NOT the Extra Clean or Colgate Plus, then you can use the coupon to score some cheap toothbrushes.

I also heard people were getting cheap Colgate Toothpaste, but the two stores that I visited did NOT have any over the size of 4.0 oz which the coupon states they have to be. So, again, please, make sure to read your coupons & packages to compare & make sure you are getting the right size for the coupon.

I was excited to hear people were getting free Speed Stick Deodorant…again, the sizes of the deodorants at my Dollar Tree did NOT qualify. This one made me sad since hubby uses Speed Stick, but the coupon clearly states that is Excludes 2-oz., 1.4-oz. and 0.5-oz. Sizes…which is all that my Dollar Tree carries.

As with the Betty Crocker Fruit Roll-Ups, I heard people say they also got the Scooby-Doo & Ocean Spray fruit snacks cheap with the coupon I posted above with the Betty Crocker picture. At my Dollar Tree, these were in the small baggies & the coupon clearly states “BOX”.

*So, all this to say, please be careful to read your coupons & make sure they match the items you are purchasing. It’s wonderful to get free stuff. I enjoyed getting my box of Shredded Wheat & hubby was super happy with that. But, we don’t want to lose the privilege of couponing at Dollar Tree if coupons are not used correctly. This post is based on the sizes & items that I found at MY STORES.

  1. I had thought about taking some of my coupons to Dollar Tree and journal my experience on Edge of Insanity. But after reading this (and knowing our store), I personally don’t think it’s worth it anymore. Our store never really has any fully stocked shelves and it is a mess, so I think I will pass. Thanks for telling us what you’re experience was!

I had no problem at Dollar Tree today with the $1 Olay bar soap coupon from the most recent P&G insert. I got one bar of Olay and only paid tax.

Our Dollar Tree store has been accepting coupons for awhile now. I had the same problems that you did. My coupons usually didn’t match the exact item or it was the wrong size. I really don’t think it’s worth the trip. I hope people are reading their coupons!!

    • For me, the free Shredded Wheat is nice if I am going to be by there anyhow. Wouldn’t make the trip since I can only use one coupon at a time, but if I am at Target already, then I wouldn’t mind walking over to DT to get the free cereal. So, not worth it for me to drive there for just the deals, that’s for sure.

  4. The dollar tree in my area has been accepting coupons for over 6 months now and I was able to get the Colgate toothbrush 2 packs and they also had some child toothbrushes that I was ale to get cheap. As for the deodorant I have been getting the Speed Stick and paying only tax. My dollar tree carries a 1.8 oz size that is not listed in the sizes excluded. They always watch the coupons like hawks and have never said anything because the way the coupon is worded to exclude those specific sizes and not the 1.8 oz. I don’t do a lot of couponing here just what I know I can find for free or cheap that is worth it. Hope this helps!

    • Thanks for sharing, Ashley. I hope my DT gets the double packs of toothbrushes! It certainly is different around the country what they carry, even different from the Madison store & Hsv stores.

  5. I had a terrible time at my Dollar Tree in CT. First of all, the cashier was an airhead, and called the manager because she’d never seen a coupon before, and was unaware they were accepting coupons at all. Once the manager came, she also didn’t know what to do, so she called the big boss on the phone. I had two coupons, and they DID match the products described; L’oreal makeup. One was for ANY eye product, and one was for ANY lip. They read the whole coupon, including the fine print over the phone. That was the only register open, so there was a good twenty people behind me. It was a scene from a horror film where the angry mob comes and screams at you. “What’s going on?” “They have coupons?” It was terribly embarrassing, and it took over an hour for me and my family to use two coupons. NOT WORTH THE TRIP!
